Stepping Towards Comfort in Honduras
One of our partners, Food For the Poor, sent us a report of our work together in Honduras. Honduras is one of the most impoverished countries in Latin America with one of the highest levels of income inequality in the region. According to the CIA World Factbook, more than 48 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. Check out their report below, along with a few photos.
Shoe Donation Provides Comfort and Improves Foot Health
Slide sandals provide cushioned comfort and are convenient because they are easily slipped on and off. They are comfortable, lightweight shoes. Also referred to as slides, the leisure footwear is suitable for indoor and outdoor use and is great to wear in hot weather due to its open style.
“During the distribution of the container of sandals, we allocated them to groups who would benefit the most from wearing them, and we ended up making several deliveries,” explained Heydy Bu, a representative of Food For The Poor’s in-country partner. “The elderly and youth residing in group homes located in the most vulnerable communities were very thankful to receive them.
“We provided shoes to the elderly from several adopt-a-grandparent programs because we know that comfort is essential to them, and we distributed the footwear to children’s homes so that they, too, could enjoy a pair of leisure footwear to wear in and around their home,” Heydy said.
Adopt-a-grandparent programs combat loneliness in the elderly by creating relationships with younger people willing to spend time with them. Children’s homes in Honduras are residential facilities for children who have been abused or come from vulnerable home environments.
“Both the elderly and our youth loved them and said their feet felt good wearing them,” Heydy said. “All the recipients were grateful for the shoes, and many said that the sandals are ones that last a long time.”
